Psychological Landscapes
“Psychological Landscapes” is a photographic series exploring mental health, and the internal battles those with anxiety, depression, etc. face on a daily basis. The installation, featuring large scale photographic prints and auditory elements, aims to capture the isolating and daunting task of standing up to, and living in spite of, these struggles. However, pulling oneself out of a depression, or nervous spiral, is difficult. There is a constant struggle between one’s own mind, pulling further and further into despair after each breakdown, and the person inside who wants to live and live peacefully. Through photographing self-portraits in run down, abandoned, and lonesome spaces, the series explores different aspects of fighting oneself: from anxious spirals, to bouts of self-hatred, to depressive episodes, to feeling like you may just be better off dead. The portraits put into images what cannot always be expressed correctly with words about mental health: How does it feel to want to escape from your own head?
